Invisalign® clear aligners take a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligners are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you simply wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners (and switching to a new set typically every week) will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plan out for you.

Invisalign Teen® is a great alternative to braces for teens who would prefer to straighten their smile without braces. With Invisalign Teen®, your teen can play in the school band and even play sports without changing their schedule or their approach.

Advantage Orthodontics is pleased to offer our patients state of the art metal braces that move your teeth comfortably and efficiently. These smooth low profile braces are more comfortable and efficient than braces of the past. These brackets are combined with high-tech wires that move your teeth gently and gradually to produce a beautiful and healthy result. Thanks to these innovative new braces, achieving your perfect smile can be faster and easier than you ever thought possible! Dr. Ford will provide a customized treatment plan for you to provide the best solution for you or your child.

For many adults, the thought of having metal braces is enough to discourage them from receiving treatment. However, today’s orthodontic treatment options offer a variety of braces (like clear braces) and appliances that are comfortable, efficient and customized to meet your needs.

Clear braces are made from translucent materials that make them much less visible against the teeth than traditional metal brackets. There’s no compromise in orthodontic treatment with clear braces; they are just as effective at moving your teeth into their newly aligned positions. They are a great option for those who prefer braces but would like a more discreet appearance. Ask the team at Advantage Orthodontics to show you how they look; you might be surprised that something so subtle can make such a difference!

While many orthodontic issues can be addressed when your child is older, there are a few cases where it is advantageous to fix these problems early. Phase I (or early) treatment can maximize long term results and/or reduce the overall complexity of your child’s treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation around the age of 7. At Advantage Orthodontics, this complimentary initial exam will give you the opportunity to meet with our orthodontists who will provide you with more information on whether your child can benefit from early orthodontic treatment. If your child is not ready for treatment, they can be monitored through our Growth and Development Program.

Some of the objectives that Phase I treatment can address include:

  • Relief from teasing from peers
  • Management of certain habits such as thumb-sucking, or tongue-thrusting
  • Creating space for un-erupted permanent teeth
  • Maintaining space for permanent teeth after early loss of a primary (baby) tooth
  • Correcting dental interferences which can result in crossbites and facial asymmetries promoting (or controlling) jaw growth
  • Expanding the upper arch to gain space for erupting permanent teeth and broaden the smile
  • Reducing the risk of trauma to vulnerable protruding front teeth

If it is determined that early treatment is not necessary at this time, we offer a complimentary Growth Guidance Program which allows Dr. Ford to regularly examine and monitor the growth and development of your child’s teeth and jaws. There is no charge for these visits; we don’t want anything to stand in the way of you having the information you need to have treatment for your child at the best time for the best results. We still encourage parents to bring their child around age 7 for their initial exam, and want you to know that with our Growth and Guidance Program, we’ll keep you informed every step of the way.

Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, involves the correction of a wide range of minor and major jaw discrepancies using orthodontics in conjunction with oral and maxillofacial surgery. Both specialties are needed to treat these cases because both the teeth and jaws are not in proper alignment. The benefits of surgical orthodontics can be life-altering because of improved esthetics, and an enhanced ability to chew, speak, and even breathe. Dr. Ford has a great deal of experience working in coordination with oral surgeons to provide the best results possible

Retainer | Advantage Orthodontics | Midland, MI | Invisalign

Once treatment is complete, it’s important to maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment to protect your bite and smile for life. At Advantage Orthodontics, we believe retainer wear is a life-long commitment. In fact, it is so important we often include a bonded retainer on the inside of your lower front teeth, and an upper retainer that you will wear all the time (except for eating, brushing and flossing) for the first four months after treatment. After four months of full-time retainer wear, retainers are then worn each night (at least 8 hours) to maintain your smile for life. When it comes to retainer wear, our motto is “night time for a life time”. We will monitor you during the first 18 months of your retainer wear after completing treatment.

Below are some other helpful guidelines for your retainers:

  • Take your retainers out when eating, and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants.)
  • Clean retainers with a toothbrush and liquid dish soap. Wash them every day, but avoid hot water.
  • Cleaning retainers removes plaque, to eliminate odor and prevent build-up of calculus (hardened plaque).
  • When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Pets love to chew on them!
  • Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to them faster.
  • Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken call us immediately.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your retainers, or your retainers need adjusting, call us.
  • Do not try to adjust them yourself.
  • Always bring your retainers to your appointments.
  • Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, napkins and pets.
  • Retainer replacement will incur an additional fee but with proper care they should last for years!
